Dual-fuel technology underpins long-term competitiveness

Industry leaders anticipate a rapid acceleration in the adoption of alternative marine fuels after 2030 as emissions regulations become increasingly stringent.

Green ammonia is emerging as a leading solution for deep decarbonisation, and EMF’s vessels are being constructed with dual-fuel engines that can be converted to run on ammonia once the fuel becomes commercially viable—a trend mirrored across the industry as major players increasingly commit to ordering only dual-fuel ships. This approach ensures the flexibility to meet future regulatory requirements and sustains long-term competitiveness.

Trump’s opposition slows near-term progress but does not alter the industry’s strategic direction

At the same time, the IMO’s emissions reduction targets are encountering political resistance, with Donald Trump voicing strong opposition and increasing short-term uncertainty around the pace of decarbonisation. Despite this volatility, long-term emissions reduction remains a core industry priority, and regulatory developments are expected to drive broader adoption of alternative fuels over the coming decade.
