Car carrier owners will experience a substantial decrease in port fees in the United States

Car carrier operators and owners are expected to benefit from a significant reduction in port fees in the United States. The U.S. Trade Representative has proposed altering the fee structure from $150 per car unit to $14 per ton.

According to Clarksons, for a typical vessel of 6,500 ceu units, which is slightly smaller than EMF's PCTCs, the fees will decrease from nearly $1 million to approximately $270,000 per call.

The new tariffs will take effect 180 days after October 14, 2025. This announced initiative signifies a positive development for the PCTC segment and could help resolve recent tariff discussions that have affected the market. However, vessels owned by Chinese entities will continue to be subject to a progressive fee structure until 2028.
