Nine locations have now completed successful bunkering demonstrations

The global adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel reached a key milestone this week: twelve successful bunkering demonstrations, including both truck-to-ship and ship-to-ship transfers, have been carried out at nine international ports without incident.

Ship-to-ship bunkering will soon become an operational reality

Ship-to-ship bunkering, which allows for the direct transfer of ammonia between vessels, marks a significant advancement by enabling offshore refueling and reducing reliance on fixed port infrastructure. With the first dedicated ammonia bunker barge now ordered and port authorities gradually implementing regulatory frameworks, ammonia bunkering is moving from the experimental stage to operational deployment.

EMF’s ammonia fleet is engineered for flexible bunkering solutions

These developments present promising opportunities for the future conversion of dual-fuel LPG-ammonia vessels. EMF currently has three ships under construction as Very Large Ammonia Carriers, equipped with engines designed for potential ammonia retrofitting. As supply chains strengthen and global ports prepare to accommodate these vessels, the long-term investment case for scalable, low-emission maritime transport continues to build.
