Quel que soit le résultat, le marché des pétroliers est bien placé pour en tirer profit. Comme l'a souligné Alexander Saverys, PDG du groupe belge CMB : « En fait, l'histoire de l'Iran, selon nous, ne peut être que positive pour le secteur des pétroliers. » Deux résultats favorables – en résumé : Si les sanctions persistent, le pétrole continuera d'être expédié depuis des régions alternatives telles que le bassin de l'Atlantique et le Moyen-Orient, soutenant ainsi la demande de transport longue distance et augmentant les tonnes-milles, en particulier pour les grands transporteurs de brut. Si les sanctions sont levées, le pétrole brut iranien réintégrera le marché régulier et sera transporté par des pétroliers conformes (flotte blanche). Cela pourrait entraîner une mise au rebut accrue des anciens navires de la flotte fantôme, réduisant ainsi l'offre et soutenant les tarifs. Parallèlement, l'intérêt croissant de la Chine pour l'acquisition de pétroliers plus anciens – potentiellement pour transporter du pétrole iranien – exerce une pression supplémentaire à la hausse sur le marché de l'occasion. Avec une offre limitée de nouveaux pétroliers et des valeurs de navires stables, les deux scénarios favorisent une perspective positive pour le segment des transporteurs de brut.
